yhahn and I have discussed this, and the above patch won't got in as is, in favor of a ctools based approach. This will be a milestone that we need to hit before the 1.0 stable release.

I've just committed a first pass at changing class inclusion to use plugin.inc from ctools. There maybe some small api changes still here as I clean things up, but nothing major. Setting to fixed.
