Drupal User and Browser Survey

I see Dries conducted a survey back in October 2005 to "to get feedback on the Drupal.org website and to prioritize the work we should put into improving it" and that he was able to collect some very helpful info. Thanks Dries! (I hope you're not reading this during your honeymoon!) I'd like to know a bit more about Drupal "users" (as described below in Question 1) and the types of browsers used by both Drupal users and visitors to their web sites (as described in Questions 2 & 3). Overall, I'd like to develop and refine a general "Drupal user and browser survey" during the next few weeks based on the feedback of people like you and then ask someone with posting authority to post it on the front page as a survey.

As described in Question 1 below, I classify myself as 1.c., a Drupal business "light" user, and I use both Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox in surfing the web, although I primarily use IE6. I also believe it's important to have drupal.org AND core/contributed modules fully functional for both IE and Firefox. Although IE isn't open source and has serious issues from time to time, IE is still the dominant browser as reported by W3Schools. And for those of us with customers, we need to respect the fact that we can't force our customers to all migrate to Firefox, now can we? ;)

So…has a browser survey ever been conducted such as the one below? What other questions on usage would be good to ask? I'm no statistician so if there are any of you out there with a stats background (or not!), feel free to modify however you like to improve this survey...or to completely trash my questions and write your own.

Thanks in advance,
Walt

Here goes...

1. For drupal.org, please state how you primarily classify yourself as:
a. a Drupal personal "light" user, that is, you use Drupal for your personal web site which is primarily of a non-commercial nature and any modifications to core/contributed modules and/or themes are minor, whether you do them yourself or pay someone to do them;
b. a Drupal personal "heavy" user, that is, you use Drupal for your personal web site which is primarily of a non-commercial nature and any modifications to core/contributed modules and/or themes are minor, whether you do them yourself or pay someone to do them;
c. a Drupal business "light" user, that is, you use Drupal for your business web site which is primarily of a commercial nature and any modifications to core/contributed modules and/or themes are minor, whether you do them yourself or pay someone to do them;
d. a Drupal business "heavy" user, that is, you use Drupal for your business web site which is primarily of a commercial nature and any modifications to core/contributed modules and/or themes are major, whether you do them yourself or pay someone to do them;
e. a Drupal developer, that is, you use Drupal to build/maintain web sites for others, whether on a volunteer or paid basis;
f. a Drupal reseller, that is, you resell a solution that is developed by someone else such as a packaged Drupal download with pre-installed modules (core AND contributed modules) and/or web hosting specifically for Drupal-powered web sites;
g. Other (please state in a few words how you describe yourself if a-f above do not apply to you).
(Any other categories we should add?)

2. Please select which browser you MOST commonly use:
a. Internet Explorer (IE 5, IE6, and/or IE7);
b. Firefox;
c. Mozilla;
d. Netscape;
e. Other (please state by name).
(Any browsers we should add/delete?)

3. Please select which browser visitors to your Drupal-powered web site(s) MOST commonly use (this can often be determined by simply looking at your web site stats):
a. Internet Explorer (IE 5, IE6, and/or IE7);
b. Firefox;
c. Mozilla;
d. Netscape;
e. Other (please state by name).
(Any browsers we should add/delete?)

(What other questions should we add? I don't want to make this survey too long, but what about their server type, e.g., Linux, Windows IIS, etc.? Their database type, e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.?)

Perhaps better change that to browserfamily (rendering engine)?

Most commonly used families on the desktop:

  • Trident - Internet explorer, Maxthon, Avant, Netcaptor, Netscape (!)
  • Gecko - Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Camino
  • KHTML - Konqueror, Safari, Omniweb
  • Presto - Opera
  • more...?

Just curious, what is the purpose of the survey?

Great question!

I'd simply like to know a bit more about:
- Drupal "users" (as described in Question 1)
- the types of browsers used by both Drupal users and visitors to their web sites (as described in Questions 2 & 3)
- ...and any other useful survey questions that users such as you can contribute.

I think it would be both interesting and insightful to know more about the Drupal community.

Being able to select only one from list 3 wouldn't make much sense in my case. Users of Trident and Gecko are damn near dead-even on my site.

I think we should also ask which version is being used.

a. 4.5.x
b. 4.6.x
c. 4.7.x
d. CVS (?)
