Maxlength + FCK

I am obviously a beginner and have been trying to fix this problem for hours. I want a maxlength countdown field along with an editor that has enough of a toolbar for a contributor to type a story with a basic toolbar of options for editing like with word. I am using the fckeditor and the word count only works with the plain text editor. Is there any rich text editor that works with maxlength? Thanks,
