The documentation (http://drupal.org/node/324868) mentions selection of a filter (Under configuration, point 3), but none appears on the settings form.

The 5.x tree doesn't have all the features of the 6.x tree - that is probably one of them. Sorry

I think I'm just going to abandon the 5.x tree, since very very few people are still using it
