I was hoping there was a way to indicate in the thumbnail view which of the thumbnails we're "on" at any given time. Is this possible?

Check out the patch here: #588944: Allow one to choose either thumbnails or numbers as pager items and see if using views slideshow singleframe with the thumbnail feature will work the same for you. If so you can use the .activeSlide class on the pager a tag.
