After basic install & selecting the "basic" custom color widget on admin/settings/fivestar, I get a blank page after hitting save. Normal widget save without problems.

Could this be related to a wrong version GD library with PHP?

The best way to identify the cause of the blank screen is to look in your php error log. What do you see there?
