Hi, I'm developing a fairly basic forum site, and I really like working with Zen subthemes, but the default forum layout for zen is, unsurprising, minimal, whereas blue marine, nasty as it is, has quite a good default forum layout, IMPO. Can I get the best of both worlds? Are there any zen subthemes that anyone is aware of that are good for forums? Or any other themes which people might think are suitable? It needs to be threaded discussion (quite a friendly but technical engineering audience) so I've dropped advanced forums off my radar for now.

Not really sure what you are looking for, the Genesis SUBTHEME is partially styled, including the tables so the forum looks quite good out of the box. If you want it 100% width (its fixed width by default) it's a simple CSS change as it supports both fixed and fluid layout, the docs are very good and explain it all.
Pimp your Drupal 8 Toolbar - make it badass.
Adaptivetheme - theming system for people who don't code.

You can use AF with threaded forums. The only problem I'm aware of is the jump links won't work quite right because they calculate the page number assuming the latest comment will be at the end.
