This module is possibly the core of my new site. But how actively maintained is GMAP? The latest dev is from 2009-Jun-09. I guess many people/sites are using it. Is more community efford needed?

I guess I found the anwer: http://drupal.org/project/gmaps

So, this module looks abandoned to me.

I must say I'm pretty confused... This module looks abandoned.

Gmap and Location modules have lots of users but in terms of CVS commits and development they appear to have stagnated. Then there's Google Maps Tools, Geo, Geo-Gmap, OpenLayers, GeoGUI, SimplestGmap, Mapstraction, Nice Maps and half a dozen others. None seems super active and few have anywhere near the maturity of Location + GMap.

Should abandoned module proceedings be started on this? Are some of the old regulars/shining lights still around? I've done a lot of searching around the web and groups and am none the wiser. It'd be great Drupal map users had a little clarification.

Marking as a Documentation issue, and a critical one at that - this is a great module, but if it has no future that should be clearly stated so the community can adapt and move forwards.

I opt for the Google Maps Tools module because it seems to be developed by the same developer that worked on the gmap module. The module seems to be active. I only hope that a v1.0 release will be out soon. I also hope that some automated migration is possible. I don't want to migrate all my location data manually.

Ugh. How disheartening. I guess I have to pick up and move, and just manage the bugs I have now on my own. Since the new gmaps module is CCK based I am hoping that it will still use the same information from the Location field. It would be great if any maintainer could update the module page so that users don't spend time incorporating this module. How about just posting a note like WARNING!! THIS MODULE IS NO LONGER MAINTAINED!! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!! until the kinks get worked out in the GMaps module. [sigh] I also see that the gmaps module was supposed to be released in January 2009, unless that is a typo. That doesn't make me hopeful to have a release soon.

I don't think xmarket (maintainer of gmaps) was involved with this module (he's not listed as .

I think that seeing as though this module has so many users it shouldn't be abandoned (at very least for drupal 6).

I have done a lot of work with this module over the past 18 months for various clients so I have a reasonably decent understanding of it.

I'd be happy to devote some of my spare time to helping co-maintain it. I could at least get a whole heap of these issues out of the queue.

I'll ask bdragon.

rooby - that would be awesome. In reviewing GMaps it doesn't really seem very close at all to replacing this. Although I appreciate the different direction the module has taken I think that there is much of this module worth retaining, and it would be better to take a more iterative approach to making it more "Drupal-like" rather than making a clean break. Or if that is too unrealistic, perhaps just maintaining the module with the aim of making a smooth transition to the new module.

Ok, well since we have a volunteer already (thanks sooo much rooby) I'm initiating the abandoned module process...

Title changed and waiting begins... Rooby, if you could read the and perhaps action the top half of the page I linked above we can attack this from both angles.

At present though since the changes to Views 2.7 it's now partially broken. There's a dozen tested patches waiting to be added to the module and a load of issues that can be handled. I don't know much about the internals of this module (yet), but will try to help out on the issue tracker when I can.

This module is good, very popular and is too important to let die yet, especially for D6.

Subscribing. I'd like to know which Google Maps module is community-supported and has a future for Drupal 7.

bdragon’s picture

It's not abandoned. I'm just currently too busy with other things at the moment to have a visible presence in the queue here (mainly d.o usage statistics work.)

I am aware of the Views 2.7 problems, and the cause, but I just haven't had the time to fix it.

SeanBannister is on the access lists since the 25th of November.

Rooby, I can't find your CVS account in the system. What's your account name?

Also, sorry to anyone who has tried to contact me via email recently -- I haven't had time to read email either.
I do get any messages that people direct at me in IRC though, and am usually able to respond directly.

Sorry bdragon, didn't mean to step on your toes, just wanted to keep this module ticking over. Glad you're still about!

Really then, once we have a couple more people able to make commits for the module to take some of the workload off bdragon, what we have here is a documentation issue: Should users be using this module, or Gmaps or Geo-related ones? What is it's future? May I request a little update to the project page for this module? It would really help us to make these decisions and get an idea of the location-based landscape for Drupal. I've read a lot in groups.d.o and am honestly none the wiser.

Thanks again and I do hope to be of some help with the issue queue over the forthcoming months.

FYI, I approved rooby's CVS application, and he has now access to this project CVS.

I am a fan and see the utility in many applications. I am available to help with documentation, how-to's and testing on this module and its integration.

bdragon’s picture

He also has access to location and gmap_addons now as well, as I just added him.

rooby’s picture

Thanks.

I have a few things on my todo list but hopefully I'll start looking at some issues this weekend.

As usual I'll start with bug reports, anything with a patch will no doubt get first look.

I'm glad to hear that this module is going to be active maintained from now on!

Thanks to the people who make it possible.

Yeah, this is why I love our community. :)
