I store the .GZ files in sites/all/modules just for documentation purposes but it sure would be nice if Drupal opened the .GZs and open the .TARs and created or replaced the module folders, as necessary ... rather than the Drupalmaster having to open, open, and upload all the time.

There are modules that do that, e.g. http://drupal.org/project/plugin_manager if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway, this issue tracker (for the module paths module) is not the right place for this unrelated feature request about drupal module installation workflows.
