I need Italian language form my website: Is openpublish useless to me?

OpenPublish as a distribution is definitely not useless to you. It can support any language that Drupal supports. You'll need to turn on the internationalization features and use them appropriately. In fact, there are many non-English sites out there already using OpenPublish. Getting multi-lingual setup takes, probably, mid-level Drupal skills. What doesn't support Italian (and other languages) is the OpenCalais semantic tagging service. Currently, English, French, and Spanish only - refer to http://www.opencalais.com/genfaq. So, the semantic tagging features of OpenPublish will not work for you - but that is only a fraction of what the platform can do for you.

I'm a bit interested in using this for Swedish sites as well - seems like it could be a good idea then.

Could perhaps some documentation be added to the site on the status of the internationalization of OpenPublish? How much works out of the box? Perhaps including translation status? My impression of the current feature list on the site was that OpenPublish wasn't really aimed for a non-english audience.

My same comment applies - OpenPublish can be translated into any language, the same as any other Drupal site. There are tons of resources for how to build multi-lingual and/or non-English sites in Drupal, and since nothing is really different in OpenPublish we aren't planning on reinventing that documentation.

All modules and custom code has different level of internationalization and the level of internationalization possible with a distribution like OpenPublish is dependent on the level of each and every part of it and any additional work made on top of that. There should be an easy way of finding out that level if you want international users.

Look at eg OpenAtrium that has an entire subsite, https://translate.openatrium.com/ , dedicated to translation status - there's definitely a use for that. Also take into consideration that OpenPublish do push for a module that isn't very internationalized - the OpenCalais - and there's even more reason to compile a status of the translatability of OpenPublish as a complete distribution.

I can of course gather that information myself as you're saying by looking up each and every module that forms OpenPublish - but why have a distribution at all if the users of it should have to look up every part themselves to find out the status of the distribution?
