This is such a great site and as easy as it is to put a chatroom (here is link for mod it will take 2 minutes) ---start---http://drupal.org/project/chatroom ---end --- Why isnt there one here? Lets push drupal to new heights we need a chatroom!

It's only my opinion, but...

Hmm well i guess its trivial
Hmm well i guess its trivial but the irc link ---start--- http://drupal.org/irc ---end--- does not bring you to any active rooms on mibbit , besides thats lame to say the developers of a content management script cant have chat on site =/ ---booohooo no smilies in drupal =(

Really?
I've only been a software developer for 25 years, but I think IRC is a completely useless way of getting support. I can't understand why Drupal insists on doing it with IRC instead of having a usable forum or newgroup feeds. When I learnt Drupal, it was in spite of the support available, certainly not because of it.
Apples and oranges
The point was that we prefer IRC over a web based chat room. That has nothing to do with forums or newsgroups. And we do have a forum. You're using it right now.
Michelle
Why?
Why?
So we can provide support
So we can provide support more easily and build a strong foundation of drupal users =]
...
We don't even have an "Off-topic" forum, so a Chat Room just wouldn't fit in here.
~silverwing
What do you mean by that that
What do you mean by that that its like a morgue in here? i agree :|
I've seen sites with kick a%#
I've seen sites with kick a%# communities because of chatrooms & this sites got the potential to have a cool community
Why don't you try providing
Why don't you try providing support in the current forums? Then, once you've shown your commitment to the community, "the-powers-that-be" may be more amenable to other options that you may care to suggest.
As it stands now, you are making statements without providing any facts to back them up. Just in this one comment of yours you don't tell us anything about what kind of sites you are referring to. You also provide no information on why a chatroom enhances the sites in any way.
I agree thats why i have
I agree thats why i have dedicated a drupal support chatroom from my site to help all of you I just sent an email to the staff at drupal & thank you for all of your kind words =)
.
We already have a kick ass community and I don't see adding a chatroom to the website being any better than the 10+ Drupal channels we already have on IRC. Chat on the web usually is not as good as using a dedicated IRC client.
Michelle
hey michelle sorry ive gone
hey michelle sorry ive gone to the drupal irc chats and they were all empty =( maybe you could link me to the chatroom that you all use?
The biggest two
#drupal - 493 people
#drupal-support - 356 people
Of course, most of those are lurkers and not everyone is even looking at IRC at any given moment. But they certainly aren't empty

They're listed right on the irc page silverwing linked above-- probably the most active are #drupal and #drupal-support.
hey sorry guys maybe i just
hey sorry guys maybe i just am dense, but when i go to mibbit i go to HOME than browse the irc network by typing in the search bar #drupal it than brings me to a screen contains links to 8 drupal channels none of which house more than 23 users =( so i guess misguided tee hee

Again, as stated on the irc page, drupal uses the freenode network, which, if I'm not mistaken, has recently blocked access via mibbit due to abuses.

good thing d.o has documentation. : /
_
yeah really-- this is the main reason I find it so hard to motivate myself to contribute any. :-(
oh wow worldfallz could you
oh wow worldfallz could you provide me with a more accurate link? I am logged into mibbit right now i would really appreciate the help
_
Sorry i don't use mibbit-- i just remember the frackus about access via mibbit being cut off. afaik, you can't access freenode with mibbit you'll have to get a real irc client.

chatzilla for firefox
ok will do yes I wish this
ok will do yes I wish this was a lil more well know and documented so others new =( thanks again

I don't understand what you want documented?
There are many IRC clients. We can't document them all.
Mibbit is likely disqualified because it doesn't require any kind of a signup. Though I've not spent time in IRC for the past few weeks. I'd venture a guess that because it requires no identification it is likely prone to spammers and all around trouble makers which the IRC channels around drupal don't need and have zero tolerance for.
Example of kick ass community
Just so we have an idea =] http://member.nin.com/chat/
So, a totally different kind
So, a totally different kind of site—a band vs. an open source project—has a chat. Even so, what do they actually gain from the chat that their forums don't provide? At this point, you still haven't given any reason for chat over what's already available here (including IRC).
chat
In many communities the chat rooms provide a social interaction that irc just seems to lack. I haven't use irc in 5 years just because of all the bots and basically people not paying attention to the room anyway. Other chat rooms seem to provide a more interactive environment than irc. So maybe the chat room environment is considered to be more "social" and alive.
On the other hand a community isn't built on a chat room, I have created many gaming sites and chat rooms, some have flourished and others have failed. In the end, the community/people/members need to create the environment for a successful chat room, not software.
And that would bring another question to the drupal community, which software to use, where to upload, where to host it and who would pay for it, if that was the case.
Also when people are working on their site and run into a problem sometimes it's faster to get an answer in a live environment. Like I said I haven't used irc in a long time and I would probably be more inclined to use a chat room or the forums than run to irc.
I'm sure this raises more opinions and questions, just remember its the members of this fine drupal community that can or could create a very active chat room environment.
