A "top story" slideshow module?

Hi guys, we're pretty new to the whole drupal experience. We have worked a lot with joomla, wordpress and other open source cms's in the past, but we've not touched drupal until now. Basically what we're looking for atm is a module that will fetch nodes and put them in a carousel slideshow on the front page.
Some sites who're using such a news slideshow are:

etc..if anyone could point us in the right direction where we can find such a module, we'd appreciate the help. We've looked through the module section and we found 1 or 2 modules, but they're in dev phase and not working correctly.

Start with Views
Start with the Views module, then examine any of the various Views plugins such as

http://drupal.org/project/viewscarousel
I would pay more attention to the issue queues and the activity around each of these modules, including the usage statistics, than the "beta" status.
