this is a release blocker for declaring 6.x-2 stable.
there will be no guarantees of an upgrade path within 6.x-2 alphas, betas, etc, but there will be one from the latest 6.x-1 release to 6.x-2.

ok, i've committed an upgrade path, and tested it on some existing 6.x-1 data i have. needs someone else with this data to test it as well.
*please backup your data/use a dev setup before testing this code.*
