Could someone explain why div#main has position: relative in zen themes

I'm developing a sub-theme of zen based on fixed width layout. It's not working unless I remove the position:relative property from my div #main. But I don't want this to have some knock-on effect elsewhere I don't know about. I'm not sure why the property's there. Could anyone explain? Thanks
