I don't quite understand why the information for the script is between < !-- -->
also when I click on the link
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
I get a bunch of java script stuff written to screen.

jcnventuraThe information for the script is between HTML comments because that's the way that Google generates it.
That URL point to Google's Javascript to display the ad, so obviously by accessing it, you'll see the code..
However, nothing of your report (except the title) indicates what your problem is, or indeed if there's a problem at all. Can you please indicate clearly your problem and, if possible, provide the URL to your site.

socialnicheguru commentedhttp://socialnicheguru.com is the site
i gave as much detail as I know at the moment.
would there be a reason why the javascript comes up as a page full of numbers and letters when I click on the link that I see in the source?

jcnventuraLooking at the site, I see that your publisher ID is a number.. Google usually assigns them as pub-9999999999999 .. Are you sure that in your case your ID doesn't start with "pub-"?
I think that by configuring the module with the proper publisher ID, you'll start to see the ads.
