Fivestar does not seem to pass the vote to Voting API

My nodes are showing the fivestar rating system correctly, however, when I click on the rating I want to assign to it, the stars light up and then go back to gray. Same thing happens to a node that already had a vote assigned to it, the stars go from active to gray but on a refresh the votes are still there.

I have tried uninstalling the fivestar module and re-enabling it but there has been no change.

Please advice.
