I'm the webmaster at olski.org a website that simply allows people to work on large projects together with audio connection, chat, forum, etc etc... anyway I got involved with massive online 3d project for olski.org and have been bringing in a lot of traffic from them. I'd like to see more Drupal people over there & I'd like to integrate your chat into olski for you all to use!

I don't understand the point of this thread nor why it was placed in news and annoucements. Drupal developers use IRC channels to communicate. I'd highly doubt that would change especially to a server not under infrastructure teams control.

OL-SKI’s picture

Oh no I think you did get the wrong impression =) but i do see what you mean,- why dont drupal users just hang here? Sure I assumed they are involved with other projects other than drupal besides www.olski.org has a lot of powerful tools & all in one place. You can have a audio conference for one versus a chatroom speaking of which i would like to incorporate the drupal support chat on olski.org but was having difficulties with mibbit can you help?

vm’s picture

Based on my experience every user has their own favorite IRC software. I prefer to use IRC directly in firefox. It's called chatzilla. Noone that I know of uses a module integrated in Drupal to connect to IRC through any website. Those of us who use IRC connect directly to the freenode servers. Having an IRC channel embeded in a webpage sucks, to be blunt. You can't leave that page. Firefox opens IRC in a new/separate window as if it's separate software.

audio and such isn't all that nice a feature, though props to you for setting it up. At work and in some circles dimdim can be used for web conferences. I don't know that anyone in drupal land uses dimdim for much of anything.

OL-SKI’s picture

Sure I can understand your perspective but others just create another tab for chat on olski. Why does mibbit prevent me from putting drupal chat support in a Iframe widget for olski?

vm’s picture

tabs while cool for webpages aren't for IRC chat for a few reasons IMO.

no idea what mibbit does or doesn't do anything. I've never used it, I like the simplified features of chatzilla in a separate window with complete control.

OL-SKI’s picture

what is IMO also i love firefox and have used chatzilla can i make my own chat room with it?

vm’s picture

IMO = In My Opinion

no you can't make a chatroom for you site with chatzilla. You can however create a channel on freenode that stays on freenode. I think you are missing some of the fundamentals of what IRC is and what it is intended for. There is no way to embed freenode into a website. freenode is a network not a program. IT would be similar to trying to embed AOL into a webpage. There really is no point. If there was a point to putting IRC in a webpage drupal developers would have done this long ago, especially if it made anything easier with reference to communication and workflow. Matter of fact the channels would be embedded right here on drupal.org

Running chat rooms especially those made with PHP can be major resource hogs.

Can you look at the set up here and please tell me of the flaws you find if any? http://www.olski.org/node/62

vm’s picture

First thing that jumps out at me and totally sucks is that when I'm on that page you linked to and I hit the back button in my browser to get back to this thread, I'm trapped on your site. That in and of itself will never make me want to go back there.

Otherwise, your site is your site and you are free to do with it what you want regardless of how I feel about it. I'm no one special in that regard.

OL-SKI’s picture

NO, are you saying I am one of those sites that wont let you leave! haha lol, no I am not, I dont know what you are talking about olski.org is tested on all major browsers IE, firefox, chrome, you are misunderstood, why are you teasing me like this? olski.org is quite a powerful website?

vm’s picture

Um, I'm not teasing you or anyone. As stated, when I click on the link you gave me above and I wanted to get back to this thread by hitting the back button in the browser it kept reloading your site. Whether you want to believe me or not and regardless of what testing you've done. Would you like to see a screencast of the event as proof? I'll gladly provide it.

I'm not here to judge your website or the power of it. If you want critiques of your website put it in the showcase forum.

vid link removed, OP finally realized I wasn't "teasing" = your site and the issue I've previously mentioned to prove I'm no liar.

scoutbaker’s picture

Please stop trying to foist your site off on us. We've been seeing these posts for the 5 weeks you've been a member.

You've even received a reply about your "difficulties" with mibbit before.

OL-SKI’s picture

Man you guys are F'n nasty what the hell crawled up in you and died I dont need this type of heat when i'm just trying to help. I hope they put a leash on you here cause your turning it ugly real quick oh and misunderstood i really didnt want you telling me anything about my site, I was just being nice buy, appeasing you & your feeble remarks, spawned from your animosity toward me because my sites better than yours =?

vm’s picture

aww, I assume your ego has been bruised.

you essentially called me a liar and you want to judge others?

Do you even know who the "they" are, that you want to put leashes on those who've commented? I'm assuming you don't.

When you put a post in public expect the public to comment and expect moderators to remember your screenname and your posts. Your tracker is visible to everyone on this site.

This is a warning to stop what can be considered spamming your site on drupal.org. If you have a showcase site, post it in the showcase forum. Further infractions can result in your account being blocked.

I'll ignore the remarks WRT animosity because your site is "better" than mine, except to say I don't even have a public site used for anything beyond a sandbox.

OL-SKI’s picture

Ok yes I am sorry I posted it in the wrong area, wtf how about a courtesy move? I've met some really cool people here until tonight? I dont care who he is, his conduct was rude and not gentleman like, if he wanted to chew me out why not pm me?

vm’s picture

vid link removed, OP finally realized I wasn't "teasing" = your site to prove I'm no liar. Turn the volume up so you can hear me clicking. It takes 3 rapid fire clicks to get out of your site.

Whether you care who he is or I am. When you put something in public and expect public comments not private comments. It's that simple. Fact is he is right, you've been at this thing with the chatrroms and mibbit before:

see: http://drupal.org/node/615596 & http://drupal.org/node/615596 (just moved this one out of news and annoucements too)

OL-SKI’s picture

wtf you talking about? There apparently is a hidden agenda here? I understand I posted this in the wrong place, so you have to get all pissy? All this because I was so pleased with my drupal experience I was hoping to help and provide support to the community where I could wtf...=/

vm’s picture

reread your the three posts for the answers you seek. This one and the two I've already linked in previous comment please.

No hidden agenda. It's right out in the open. You've been asked politely, your questions have been answered multiple times in multiple threads. Build your site for you and your community. Drupal.org is a support form. Drupal communication takes place here in the forums, in drupal irc channels and on drupal mailing lists which are maintained and controlled by the drupal infrastructure team.

OL-SKI’s picture

Ok i saw the video you have up? Why would my website do that? Wouldnt that qualify as a bug with drupal?

vm’s picture

Interesting apology.

No its no bug in drupal. does drupal.org do it? no. do my sites do it? no. Why your site does it? I don't know. It's possible its only that one node at which point It would be caused by something on that node.

scoutbaker’s picture

I'm not sure how exactly you believe you are helping. You previously made completely unsubstantiated claims about how chat is the best form of support (check the tracker if anyone cares). Other long(er)-time members explained the methods the d.o community use to communicate.

You then created your own site to support chat. Congratulations. You even promoted it here on the d.o site. Now you're back doing so again. Completely unneccesary. This also isn't a competition to decide who has the best site. If it was, I can guarantee that neither you or I would win such a competition.

If you want to help, why not write up a case study of what it took to set up your site? Talk about the modules you use, the issues you had to overcome, any neat tricks you used, etc. That would be helpful to all the people looking to see what can be done with Drupal, and how to do it. It even gives you an opportunity to explain why you set up the site.

WorldFallz’s picture

what the hell crawled up in you and died

We grow tired of all the 'rocket scientist' spammers thinking they are so clever with their pathetic attempts to hijack drupal.org for their own purposes. News flash: you're not clever and you don't fool anyone.

You're not 'helping' anyone by trying to drive traffic to your site with your lame attempt at a chatroom. If drupal.org wanted a chatroom, trust me, the incredibly superior infrastructure team would take care of it properly.

Enough pushing of the chatroom. No none cares. Additional such posts will be considered spam and removed.

Oh, and btw-- your links are all no followed, so there's no need to put them both in your sig and and the content of your comments, lol.
