I liked the minimalism of the theme and it is proving very user friendly. The one thing I would like to do though is lose the whole primary menu bar at the top but cannot seem to do this without the page then losing column information and beginning to stack vertically. Additionally I would like to get rid of the menu headers so only the links show up. Any help very very gratefully received, many thanks

I did not understand what do you want? you want to remove only primary links or background image behind primary links?

if you want to disable primary links from admin then you can do it by admin/build/menu

Or you can comment out following things from page.tpl.php at line no around 47-51.

          <div id="primary-menu">
            <?php if (isset($primary_links)) : ?>
              <?php print $primary_links_tree; ?>
            <?php endif; ?>
          </div>
