National Theatre Wales - Individual Event Page
At 12.30pm on November 5th 2009, John E McGrath Artistic Director of National Theatre Wales (NTW) announced the company’s first year of work at a press briefing in Cardiff. It was simultaneously broadcast through video streaming to the world. Attracting nearly 3,000 internet users from all around the world, they joined staff, guests and artists that were in attendance at the live event, at the company’s shop/office at Castle Arcade, Cardiff.

NTW's first year of work intends to theatrically map Wales. Twelve shows over one year (plus an additional finale), will take place in locations across the country, bringing the very best of Welsh writing, performing and directing together with world class artists and world class ideas from across the globe.

When it began

We had already worked with Drupal on previous projects with International Baccalaureate Organisation and Cardiff Design Festival, not to mention a few other sites that exist just for learning experiences. With the core set of tools Drupal provides, it seemed the natural choice in approaching the National Theatre Wales website. Initial meetings with the Theatre’s creative team included both internal and external expertise covering theatre, social media, graphic design and marketing/pr. With so many individuals and companies included at the early stages, there were lots of ideas thrown around to what the website should do and accomplish.

Working with an existing community

NTW already had a growing online user-base within their community hosted at Ning.com and it was imperative that this community was not lost or neglected on the new site. The decision was made that the Drupal site should pull content from Ning and no user created content features should be made available through Drupal, this ensured that all feedback and user based content was handled by Ning alone.

Unfortunately due to time we were unable to create a specific module to manage the conversation between Drupal and Ning. Having said that there maybe limitations with the Ning Api surrounding the availability of pushing and pulling data, but still something that Hoffi would like to look at in the not to distant future.

We opted to go back to basics and use RSS from the Ning community and a manual editorial process to publish the content in Drupal. Using the FeedApi and FeedApi Mapper modules combined with CCK we were able to pull fresh content in as Nodes from the Ning community and prepare it for publication by the NTW communications team.

The design and JQuery

From the initial project planning stages we realised that the site would need an edge and be different from other Theatre Companies, this probably stems from the unique approach that NTW had from the beginning through digital and more traditional brand channels. It was felt that the user should be a piece of a performance, but also feel accomplished at using the site.

Through existing knowledge of Drupal and it's core extension modules, such as CCK and Views. We were able to approach the design with an open mind and create something that really extends NTW’s brand online.

The homepage contains no exact logo, instead its essence is created through the photography, which can be poked and prodded to allow the user to discover more, and experiencing a subtle performance as the photography moves around the browser.

This was accomplished using a mixture of the Views module and some creative JQuery written by Hoffi’s development team.

Development Team

The Hoffi team on the project consisted a total of three; a project manager, designer and developer, with a number of other individuals working to produce content for the site.

Modules used

Quite a short list of modules and probably some of the most common, when extending Drupal’s core functionality.

Final thought

We would just like to thank all those involved in the Drupal community and we hope this article and the NTW website will help and inspire a little.

The honest answer would be:

We were initially going to use the domain name for both Ning and Drupal websites and some links in the existing Ning site made use of sub-directories that would have been duplicated in Drupal, causing cross linking problems, content was left in to stop this. The site was launched and to late to change it without disrupting the search engine results.

Thanks

Where in the Drupal website can I see data imported from ning ?

The community on the ning website seems quite active

http://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/forum/topics/introduce-yoursel...
and very user friendly

But the one of the strength of Drupal is to enable UGC and you choose not the use it.

What had been the cost of setting up this community (to start and the on-going cost)

Did you make an evaluation of the cost of migration from ning to Drupal ? What would the cost have been on every day basis ?

What were the advantage of staying on ning other than budgetwise ?

Thank you

andrew_hoffi’s picture

Ideally Drupal would be used for UGC, however the Ning website was setup for a number of Months before we began work. NTW's online community was an independent project out of our control and something which needed to continue smoothly with the launch of the new Drupal site. In order to not cause distruption (to the 700+ users at the time), it was decided to simply use the feedAPI to pull content from NING into the Drupal site.

Budget didn't really come into the equalisation, it was simply keeping the community happy and Ning was an already established normality for the users.

Personally I would have liked to swap over to Drupal, but that's just me ;O)

Thanks

I read further and find that Hoffi did build nice Drupal community website.
http://communitytheme.ibo.org (BTW I would be interested to read a write up about this website)

I try to have an other way to look at ning vs drupal issue.

Q: What could have been the added value of Drupal ?
A: Your homepage and over all navigation is very nice and stylish.

Q: I was wondering if it was the reason of choosing Drupal over for instance Wordpress ?
A: I may be mistaken and would be very happy to change my mind but my understanding is that even if Drupal can build very nice site like yours I would say that usually it comes at an higher cost on Drupal compar to Wordpress.

Q: Jquery framework ? Not available in wordpress and ning ?
A : t's possible in wordpress (plenty of solution) and ning (quick pointer to the use of Jquery in ning http://help.ning.com/cgi-bin/ning.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3613 http://developer.ning.com/main/search/search?q=jquery)

So I guess that you choose for some other reason.

Q: The other commonly accepted advantage of Drupal is the hability to build more complex website with transactions.
A: However, I couldn't find any transaction or e-commerce feature on your Drupal site.

http://nationaltheatrewales.org/whatson/performance/ntw01#
That lead to this screen http://nationaltheatrewales.org/content/location/bedwas-workmans-hall

I was unable to book any ticket.

Q: Can you tell me what were your reasons to use Drupal ?

Q: Do you plan to extend the functionalities ? integrate further ning and drupal ? or introduce transactions in the website ?

andrew_hoffi’s picture

I choose Drupal as I'm familiar with it: more familiar than Wordpress, which you you mentioned was an option and indeed was considered. However future plans for online booking etc. dictated that Drupal should be used as I feel it is far more open to modification than Wordpress, however that could be down to my lack of WP knowledge.

Thanks

What module used for occult the title at thumbnails in http://nationaltheatrewales.org/whatson

Thanks, and congratulations!

andrew_hoffi’s picture

Just Views, ImageAPI, ImageCache and some jQuery thrown in for good measure. All I did was override the template files for views and wrote a jQuery carousel to work with a set number of records.

Thanks

Congrats for the wonderful site.

I have a query:
As I understand from above you are pulling in content from Ning and displaying it in drupal site using feeds.
How are you managing users?
Are you maintaining users on both applications Drupal as well as Ning? Or Admin logins are there in Drupal & user need to signup in Ning application?

andrew_hoffi’s picture

The community aspect of the website is solely managed on Ning with as you described only admins using Drupal. Not an ideal route, I would have preferred to use Drupal instead of Ning to begin with, but that what was in place before we started the website.

Thanks

Nice Page! I like the nice little "share this page" menu.

Is there a special module for this, or is it some of the creative jquery?

regards

andrew_hoffi’s picture

Thanks for the comments. I thought I'd answer your nice easy one first: just some images and creative jQuery. I'm sure you can dig through the source code and grab a copy.

Thanks

I just wanted to congratulate you on a great site! It's giving me a lot of good ideas as I'm trying to implement OG for a school's re-implementation of their website.

On your site, is there any User account integration - or is that completely handled by Ning?

Tofu’s picture

Very nice, I like the combo drupal / CSS / jquery like that. First time, I thought there was a Flash website. Congratulations.

Doesn't work without javascript though! Needs to, don't you think?
