profile category string not translatable in the supposed to language

Hi,
I have a drupal install in 2 languages, french and english, the former being the default and thanks to this module I already translated 95% of the site.
I use the core profile module and in it I have 2 profile categories defined. The 2nd one is called Personal details.
I needed to get this one translated in french. So I go to the search and enter that string, which is found. It indicates with a crossed-over fr that the french translation is not done.
I click on edit to enter it. But the next page displays a box to enter an english translation when it should be a french translation box.
I have tried running refresh, update and no changes.
I did try to enter a text in the english translation box to see and the Personal details text did get translated on the english page.
So I'm wondering the reason the french translation box is not there.
