I do not get a message for anonymous users whatsoever to confirm that something has happened upon clicking "subscribe." All is working, the confirmation mail is being sent, but no feedback that the formsubmission did succeed.

This looks like the opposite of previously reported issues where the confirmation message remains after subscription and is displayed to other anon visitors. It is related to a core bug with caching, messages and redirect.
Which form has this bug?
If you can reproduce the error, try to remove the redirect from the code which brings users to the front page. Let me know the result. I'm thinking of a solution where admin can choose between redirection to a URL (input field) or a message with no redirect (user remains on the form page).
