I am a newbie so I apologise if this is not the right place to make this comment.

I am using the "basic" theme, and views slideshow to display a slideshow of images. I have the prev, pause, next controls displayed above the image. When no images are returned by the view the panel display calling the view is empty in firefox and IE8 but (only) the controls are visible in Safari (4.0.2) and chrome (3.0.195.38)

Is the issue with the module or the theme?

I cannot reproduce this using garland theme. Give garland a try and see if you have the same issue. The theme really shouldn't make a difference though.
