I'm reasonably new to drupal and would like to perform a minor version upgrade (6.14 to 6.15). This is my first upgrade.
1) In the upgrade directions, it says to "ensure that the versions of all contributed modules match the new Drupal version to which you are updating." Do contributed modules have minor version numbers? Let me explain this question with the following example ... in mid December '09, Drupal 6.15 was released ... one of the contributed modules that I use was updated after this release (CAPTCHA, January '10) and another contributed modules that I use was last updated before this release (CCK, November '09). I assume that if I upgrade core to 6.15, I will also need to upgrade CAPTCHA, and then everything will work okay. I don't need to wait for a new version of CCK to be released that is compatible with 6.15, do I?
2) During an upgrade, I will need to disable all contributed modules, perform the upgrade, and then re-enable the contributed modules. When I do this, will the modules need to be configured from scratch again? As a simple example, if I use CCK, Views, and CAPTCHA modules and perform a minor version upgrade, I assume I won't lose the content types that I've defined, the views that I've defined, and the CAPTCHA that I've configured ... is that right?
3) In the upgrading directions, it says to "switch to a core theme, such as Garland or Bluemarine" before performing the upgrade. For upgrading purposes, is a sub-theme such as Minnelli considered a core theme? What about a custom sub-theme?
Thank you for any assistance.

for minor version upgrades you don't have to disable modules or switch themes.
major version upgrades, I do as the theme in use and modules in use will have to be upgraded too.
Really?
Have you successfully done this before? I don't mean to sound like I'm questioning your Drupal knowledge (because I'm fairly new to Drupal), but in this post explaining how to update minor versions in Drupal 6, in Stage 2, Step 4, it recommends turning off all non-core modules and then re-enabling them in Stage 3, Step 4. You think this is only necessary for major version upgrades? Thanks for your response.

Multiple times. Advised the same thing multiple times (can be found doing a Drupal search and reading others success with leaving the modules enabled). Watched others do it multiple times. If you like I can install Drupal 6.14 with some modules. Enable them. Then do an upgrade to 6.15 following my own advice and do a screencast for you.
Here's my suggestion.
Test both theories on a test site with a backup of your production database. This will satisfy and create a level of security for you that no forum post, or IRC comment can.
Or just take the long and "cautious" approach and disable the modules.
Either way, if you've got a backup of your database and your files and something goes wrong. You've a way back.
Keep in mind that backups should be tested first. Specifically database backups. Its a terrible situation to be in when something goes wrong and you find too late that your backup of the database won't import. I don't see the user contributed documentation linked mentioning that part (could have missed it) likely because the upgrade.txt doesn't mention testing the backup which is the document the user used as a template, though is alot more verbose.
Also of note, in the future please refrain from posting the same question multiple times. The original post is essentially a duplicate of: http://drupal.org/node/675336 Please read and follow : http://drupal.org/forum-posting
Thanks
Thanks for the advice ... very helpful. Sorry for duplicating.
