It seems like the OpenLayers module logo could be improved upon. First, as far as legal matters go, it's a combination of

Also, it would be great if an icon could more clearly communicate what the module does, since right now the OpenLayers icon is pretty foreign (even to me, and I work with it all the time).

Anyway, you can re-add the old logo for the time being, but I'll cook up an alternative and try it out.

I agree that it could be improved upon. But we should stick with the current one until there is an alternative, and we all agree to it. That is, unless any of you think that the copyright issues are serious enough, in which case we should pull the current version.

Get those DevSeed designers crackin'!

What's the status of this? I was hoping to use this logo in my presentation next week, but now there is nothing up there to use. @phayes, if you don't have the source file, do you have an local version?

I don't think the copyright issue is huge, but I am all about a redesign as well. I also agree that the original one should not have been removed until we had an alternative.

ETA is a few days on this, possibly in time for the presentation but not guaranteed. I'll look for a backup of the old logo.

Here's the proposed logotype.

Good work; that's a lot of fun! It's not absolutely necessary, but a nice big high quality image would be really awesome before Saturday, for my presentation, but I understand if that doesn't work out. Thanks.

Would an SVG help? One is attached; you can resize to your liking with Inkscape or Illustrator or whatnot.

Awesome, thank you very much. Now my presentation will have monsters!

If this is all right with phayes, I'll post it to the project page.

Here is the original, if it is still useful. 500px PNG and EPS attached.

Our original design goals:
1. clear ref to Drupal
2. clear ref to OpenLayers
3. example of map result
4. playfull

(I removed the Google/TeleAtlas map: this one has no encumbrances.)

Love the redesign energy.

tmcw, what's the monster ref to? Is it a Drupal meme I am unaware of?

Oh - the monster is just a creation of the designer, who happens to love monsters.

zzolo’s picture

Hey @cnburnett. Thanks. Now I have choices. I am sure I can fit them both into the presentation. As far as choosing between the two, I am pretty indifferent, but if forced, I would lean towards the monster.

cnburnett’s picture

Reference... not sure what you mean. Do you mean "thanks for the old design, that's nice as a reference"?

cnburnett’s picture

You heavy lifters must decide. But encourage the group to think about how to give nods to Drupal and OL. Or not. :-)

tmcw’s picture

cnburnett: I was just not sure whether you were saying that the new logo should follow the same design goals, etc. A bit of the philosophy behind the new design is that the OpenLayers logo (the javascript-library one) isn't very recognizable, even to people who use OpenLayers a lot. And the trend has been to steer away from Drupalicon-derived logotypes towards ones that give more personality to the individual projects themselves. That said, hopefully it hints at both derivations enough.

cnburnett’s picture

@tmcw: "trend is away from Drupalicon-derived logotypes" - that is good to know. Guess I'm old-fashioned: I like Drupalicon riffs. Certainly agree that OpenLayers' logo is not as effective as it could be.

Cool, I like the monster. My only concern is that currently the little blue monster is pretty heavily associated with Development Seed in my mind - but that might just be me. It the monster used anywhere else other than Feeds? I like the monster, and if we want to try to instigate a new pan-drupal blue-monster meme, i'm totally down to that.

spydmobile’s picture

just my 2 cents, the second I saw it, I thought:
Cool. A drupalish monster eating the ESRI Logo. I bloody love it.
Now I realize it was a fantasy, but two thumbs up for this direction, I too have lamented the generic uncreative OL logo.
Monster on!

I sounds to me like we pretty much have consensus on this. Let's do it.
