Hi All,

Have been checking the Drupal site and examples for a while and i was wondering if Drupal would be right for me based on my wishlist below.

What i would want is to make a site that overall will be identical to http://www.autotrader.co.uk with the main focus on the ability to search and compare cars (in this example).
The most important question i have on Drupal is does it have a good group/user management as i want to be able to create individual logins that will have access to a predefined 'area' in the site.

Here's what i mean:
Lets say i have 3 main catagories (the final website must handle more then 100 catagories)

Audi
BMW
Mercedes

For every catagory i want to be able to set a login for the one who will be responsible for adding / maintaining content within i.e. adding car models / news etc.
Actually allowing them to manage a small mini site within the main site.
Because multiple logins will be made, i would want them to login in the backend but with limitation on what they can edit or see in the menu etc.

Would such a site be possible with Drupal?
And how much configuration would be needed to make it do as described above.

Take a look at http://drupal.org/project/og and see if that would work for you. It sounds like the most likely candidate.

Does Drupal need much configuration if i want a website with the specs provided above?
Am more of a designer and not a programmer so would i 'manage' to set this all up by myself?

It does need a lot configuring to get anything but the most basic site going. But you don't need to be a programmer to do it. I'm a programmer, but not a PHP one. And I'm not a designer at all. But I've managed to get a pretty decent site going. It does take willingness to learn and do a lot of searching through the handbooks, but it can be done. And it gets more and more user friendly with each release.

You can also do this with Taxonomy Access
http://drupal.org/project/taxonomy_access

I use OG as well - either option should work for you
You will also probably want to check out Flexinode http://drupal.org/project/flexinode which allows you to create custom node types without any programming.

Of course - Drupal is also a great platform to program in if you want something more custom.
