I open two sessions on my laptop - one in Firefox logged in as the admin and one in Safari logged in as a regular user. I've created a chat room and a chat; when both users join the chat, they can each write messages, but the messages only show up for the other user when the other user refreshes their page.

I've seen this issue reported in older releases, but not for this latest release. Any ideas on what is going wrong? I don't see any errors or warnings in the log entries, and no errors in the browsers.

Using Drupal 6.16, PHP 5.2.5 on SUSE Linux x86_64 if that matters.

Well nevermind - I think I got this worked out. I install my modules in the /modules directory. Once I created a symbolic link from /modules/chatroom to /sites/all/modules/chatroom, everything worked fine.

It would be good to add to the documentation that installing to /sites/all/modules is required; or update chatroom to work when installed in either place.

Its good practice to always install modules in sites/all/modules. That way you keep all your non-core stuff in one place. Themes should go in sites/all/themes.

would kindly explain what exactly did you do to make this work?
this is what i understood...you installed it to /modules and it didn't work, then you deleted it from /modules and installed it to sites/all/modules and it worked, right? i'm having this problem to it won't auto update only works when the page is refreshed.
I get the following error in the log
[13-Jun-2010 14:20:05] PHP Warning: require_once(./sites/all/modules/chatroom/chatroom.cache.apc.inc) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/****/public_html/chatroomread.php on line 77
