Simple question. Can I use Finder to create a drill down search of populated CCK fields of 'state' and 'city' to display on an openlayers map?

I could experiment but Gmap Tools already has something similar but not quite as nice.

Has anybody used this module with a mapping system?

I'm not familiar with that particular module. If the module has good views integration it will be possible with a Views Finder. If it relies on 'views relationships' it may be buggy. You can also work around problems like the module not being compatible with views, or a strange data format by using the Computed Field to duplicate the data in the node into a format of your choosing, and use that in the Finder instead.
Also I guess the complexity of how you imagine the form to work may play a part in whether this is suitable or not.
I'm guessing you want the options for "city" to change depending on what "state" is selected. That hasn't been implemented yet. There is also Finder Wizard which isn't 100% complete but the intention is that it will be able to do something like that on a multi-step form. Another issue that deals with this question is: #487194: Element's choices dynamically filtered by another but as you can see a lot of other issues have appeared in the meantime so that one has been put on the backburner.

Although it would be nice to have Element's choices dynamically filtered by another, it's not necessary.

Rather than pass an argument the normal way (mysite.com/maps/arg1/arg2) can Finder pass the argument using Views Filter Filter identifier: (mysite.com/maps?field_state_value=arg1&field_city_value=arg2)?

I'm cross referencing with the Openlayers issue queue and the Openlayers Geocode issue queue. http://drupal.org/node/789668 and http://drupal.org/node/792560

Hopefully, the developers of Openlayers will take the time to build some integration with finder or similar functionality for Openlayers. Thanks.

You will be unable to combine views filters with finder. I don't think it's reasonable to expect the maintainers of another module that integrates with views to support something specific to finder.

Here is an example of Finder integrated with Google Map Tools module. http://devel.thetriton.com/map/%20/%20/%20/fl/ I'm having a problem at http://devel.thetriton.com/map and would like the map to show at the URL. I guess I could just redirect the URL. I think it's very cool and has a lot of potential. I'm not going to mess with it but I think that it also integrates with the Openlayers module mapping system if I configured it correctly.

Try selecting the option in finder (under advanced?) "show results before completing the form" or something like that...
