I really like this module and want to work on a few patches and or sub-modules to improve things.
Here are a few of my ideas.
1) WYSIWYG Editor Themes
I noticed the module has a few registered theme templates for integration to the Drupal theme system. My idea is to expand upon the templates for all GUI elements even the layout of main panels in the file manager. The goal is to provide a standard theme framework for designers and system integrators to easily add features (via sub-modules) and theme the GUI to look like the interfaces of popular WYSIWYG editors (Wysiwyg, markItUp, NicEdit, openWYSIWYG, TinyMCE, Whizzywig, WYMeditor, YUI editor, ect).
2) Usability patches
The GUI is functional for IMCE but could be improved to provide better user experience. When time allows I would like to post feature issues with screen shots and patches for the community to try out. ideas may include:
a) Separating folder functions from file functions.
b) Improving jquery management of files and directories
c) drag and drop functionality (files, directories)
d) modal dialogs (select a file display features "actions")
Some of the user experience ideas I have are based on this file manager (http://ckfinder.com/). Why don't I spend time making a module that uses that? Easy IMCE is integrated into Drupal so you can get more traction with it than a 3rd party file manager just couldn't.
3) Security, extended profiles
This is more about the Drupal file proxy functions and security. But maybe when browsing the file directories on disk the file manager would also check permission rights for media. Maybe be aware of the filefield, attachment, and node access modules to not display files where the user doesn't have rights to see.
Anyway that is a few ideas I may toy with.. patches, comments, and ideas are totally welcomed and wanted.
