It is critical messaging to newcomers that Drupal is used for building websites. It appears 7 times on the current d.o.

Take inspiration from http://basecamphq.com/. Within 2 seconds you know exactly what their product does. With re.d.o, it takes quite a bit of reading and at least on the home page, you never read the words that tell you that Drupal is for building websites.

We could greatly improve this problem by:

1. Creating a large piece of text (H2) in the header similar in size to the "Come for the software..." that says something like:
"Build Better Websites...Free"
"Build Better Websites"
"Easily Build Powerful Websites"

2. Rename the "Things we built with Drupal" section to "Websites We Build With Drupal".

3. Change the call to action from "Get started with Drupal" to "Build a Website with Drupal"

4. Use the word web and website a few more times in the body. It's pretty easy to integrate and I'll make suggestions when there's a consensus that this is a good thing to do.

I'd like to amend that "Websites We Build With Drupal" should be "Websites Built With Drupal". See http://drupal.org/node/895612

I'd be in favor of clarifying that Drupal is for making websites.

1. Ben, you proposed a phrase that I really liked when we were sitting at the sprint. It isn't listed above. It was something like "Make great websites now" or something like that.

4. Should be easily doable.

Taking a stab at item #4.

Under 'Why Choose Drupal?':
Drupal is a web publishing platform created by our vibrant community and bursting with potential. Use as-is or snap in any of thousands of free designs and plug-ins to rapidly build your website. Developers love our well-documented APIs. Designers love our flexibility. Site administrators love our limitless scalability. Drupal continuously evolves. Read more about Drupal and why it's right for your next web project.

Edit: Emphasis to show changes, not to suggest those words actually be in boldface.

Descriptive text matter in the home page is completely "broken"

The descriptive text matter occurs in two chunks in the redesigned home page:
Once under "Come for the software" etc and then again immediately below "Why Choose Drupal?"

- Purpose-wise these are repetitive and together too long.
- Subjectively seen, they are very boring
- Objectively seen they are not helpful like the current drupal.org intro text which has all the essential links
- Readability wise and visually they fail to drive the points pithily - see for comparison the various main drupal sites http://acquia.com/>acquia drupal gardens
- They are crammed, not at all appealing or makes viewing or reading a pleasure - see for comparison the various main drupal sites http://acquia.com/>acquia drupal gardens
- Since the drupal sites in the above links follow almost the same broad pattern and builds up a "self-concept" or "image" of drupal, this image is broken and out of line with the Drupal chain of Drupal sites.
- When one makes the font as large as current drupal.org or as large as other main competiting cmses the contents of the first chunk of text gets hidden under the tabs.

If you feel the above needs a separate issue, that is already there at http://drupal.org/node/913002 Un-duplicate that and feel free to join.

This is provisionally fixed in the copy I proposed for the home page intro text in #895528: Consider updating home page intro text

OK, I'll close this one, and we'll deal with front page copy in #895528: Consider updating home page intro text and #895432: Update "Why Choose Drupal" text
