What are web widgets?

Widgets are live, sharable boxes of stories that can be embedded on other web sites. Stories listed or mapped in the widget can be clicked on to reveal more information about the item, with clickable links back to each story's source page and to the originating Managing News site. With widgets, you can enhance visualization of news on other sites, or aggregate information from several Managing News sites into a single dashboard.

A widget's content depends on the page you are on. If you're on a channel page, the widget will display stories from that channel, and if you're on a search result page, the widget will display the results for those search terms.

Simply navigate to the feed stream that you would like you embed through the Feeds, Search or Channels tabs, choose the display you would like (there are list and map versions of the widgets) and then click the Embed icon at the bottom of the screen.

This will display an overlay with a preview of the widget and the code used to generate it. To embed the widget in another web page, simply copy the text in the Embed code box and past into in the HTML of your web page.

Pre-requisites for embedding widgets

Web Widgets require that you are able to embed javascript into a web page. While this shouldn't be a problem for most web sites under your control, it means that you won't be able to post widgets into many public sites like Facebook or MySpace.
