Hey,
I can imagine this would be somewhat simple to achieve so I thought I'd put it out there to see what could be done.
I am happily using CiviCRM, but not CiviMail. I find it bulky and difficult to set up. The only reason I'd prefer it is because of the integration with the CiviCRM user DB. If Simplenews could have an option to sync subcriptions with the contents of a CiviCRM group, that would be awesome!
Please let me know if this is possible/who would be willing to do it.

Seems like the Simplenews Roles module could be fairly easily adapted to be a CRM Groups module.

I rewrote Steve Dondley's SimpleNews User Roles module as SimpleNews CRM Groups module.
1. Allows import of CiviCRM group contacts into newsletter subscriptions.
2. Respects the do_not_email option in CiviCRM (it does not set it as of yet, but
if it's there already, it'll respect it).
3. Keeps track of who unsubs from which particular newsletter and will
not re-import them from CiviCRM if they have unsubbed from the
newsletter already.
4. If several groups are assigned to a newsletter, and a contact is in two or more, they only get added once.
I'll post it here after I get a chance to clean it up.

I would also be interested in this, though as I recall, I have done this once with a combination of modules (besides civicrm and simplenews) but I can't remember which ones. Regardless, I would love this bit when you are done with it.

Just throwing out that I'm one more civicrm/simplenews user interested in this patch. I've read Steve and Dries's comments about the merits of the simplenews roles module. Not sure if that's stalled out the energy on this effort.
If this does move forward, I too would love to see the code.

As Simplenews maintainer will not include this in Simplenews. However as a Drupal developer I can be hired to write is as a separate module.
