I will eventually post this as a standard Drupl.org project - but since they are taking a while to set up my CVS account, I thought I would post here.
This is a custom module designed by www.LiquidCMS.ca. Until I have a project page setup on drupal.org - please see this link (www.LiquidCMS.ca/showcase1) for more info, demo and ZIP file.
The module allows a slide show presentation of teasers from a set of categorized nodes into a specified block. The module uses AJAX to return these teasers from the database.
The admin->settings for this module allow the site adminstrator to set the following parameters:
Block ID: the ID of the block that you want the showcase to display in (defaults to "showcase"
Category: the category of nodes to use for showcase (defaults to "showcase")
Delay: the time delay between slieds in the showcase
Start Delay: the delay before the showcase starts to run
Control Enable: whether to enable the showcase control panel
Top: the top absolute coordinate of the control panel
Left: the left absolute coordinate of the control panel
Although typically Drupal designers think of blocks as going in the left/right borders - a block may be located anywhere. For example the "liquid" theme used for the LiquidCMS site has a block with ID = "block-block-showcase" in the page header (in page.tpl.php).
Hope this is of use to people,

Looks useful
This is pretty cool. I don't remember seeing this one in the cvs account requests... Must have missed it. Hope you get approval soon. Are you planning on porting it to 5.x? I could use this on a site I'm working on, but I won't get to the more flashy stuff until after 5.x.

thanks
Thanks for checking it out - did you actually check out the example on my site? - it is basically in the header for my site (but start delay is set fairly long (maybe 15 seconds or so)).
As for CVS, I received a note from CVS Admin saying request was received - that was last Thursday. I sort of assumed i would get some sort of notice or info email once it was approved.
Could port to 5.0 - don't really know much about 5.0 yet - or status of it. But will likely need to get up to speed soon.

Demo, cvs
Yep, went to your site and saw the demo.
The account approval/denials seem to come in huge batches, so they probably haven't gotten to it yet. They're all pretty busy with getting 5.x ready, I suspect.
Would be good to have ithe module working in 5.x as we're not too far off from the release. See this thread for links to porting info http://drupal.org/node/82257

+1 and...
This is a great module. It would be cool if other indicators could be used to decide which text gets posted. I'm a big fan of views, so my two cents would be that a view could be created then cycle through the results for that views. Exmaple, node type: blog, category or taxonomy: animals promoted: yes
yes, views is best
I thionk you're right - views is definitely best. Then new nodes can be automatically picked up by this module through the view based on the filters etc - without having to manually add the nodes to categories.

maybe...
Well the tax addition would likely be pretty simple - but i didnt quite get the views thing - mostly becasue i am not a huge views expert.
Although after thinking about it for about 10 seconds i think i get it - could pick types of node, tax term, etc and filter on whatever and use that as source for showcased teasers - interesting.
Maybe i'll take a look at it later tonight.

added support for taxonomy
I modified to support taxonomy terms: http://www.liquidcms.ca/showcase1
Will add views support tomorrow. Also, suspect i need to do some checking code to ensure things exist - or possibly throw sql errors if cats/terms are emtpy??? but not sure.
Anyone know if forms api has anything to add JS to enable/disable select field based on radio selection???

Awesome!
I'll test and let you know what I find. I'm not sure about JS select, but I noticed there is that module that helps do it in Categories, and there should be a way to make it work with other fields.
I haven't tested yet, but does your showcase allow for any kind of controls for the user like: previous, next, pause so they can stay on a story they like or skip one, etc.?
control panel
there is a Control Panel option that you can turn on and overlay to any absolute position on your page
at the moment it has only stop and play - i used to have a next button as well.. not sure why i got rid of it.. it is a bit of a pain to sort out the queing with it although i know an older version of it worked fine. i might look into adding the NEXT back in.

Hi, i want to try this
Hi,
i want to try this showcase but the url are "Page Not Found" :(
Saluti
BES
oops.. sorry about that
Oops, my bad.. i changed (a few days ago) the node url:
it is now at: www.liquidcms.ca/showcase
although, you could find it via the std navigation through the site - or by slicking the recent news article about this in the left border...
i guess drupal should be able to have multiple urls to point to the same page.. hmmm.. i'll need to check into that.
thanks for letting me know
BTW - starting to convert this to Drupal 5

coool!!!!
Yessss, i love it. I tweak some of the code according to my needs, ad now it's almost perfect. It would be great the possibility to have multiple blocks. And even a fade effect would be great. see in action!!!

thanks (if it is fome my site) !!! I think your module is great! My dream is a solution that integrates with views with some fade effects. I imagine a views style type "showcase". So it can be placed everywhere and how many times you want. Or maybe i like only the possibility to have multiple showcase blocks.
Navigation needed
I agree that it is a great looking site. The one thing I think would be great, and I think this for this module in general, is having navigation for previous, next, and pause. I also like doing it with tabs so people have some idea what each one is. The best example of this is on aol news which switches automatically, but uses prev., next, and tabs for more user control, http://news.aol.com/
