hello

the Skinr module allows adding classes to blocks (among other things), but doesn't requires editing the templates.

suggesting you take a look on how it does it to implement the same cleaner method ;)

my comment above is refutable. it's not possible in D6.

new suggestion: support Fusion themes.
Fusion Core has a block.tpl.php

it needs to be tested against block_class
