Currently new cases have their status set to 'Close' because it the list is sorted alphabetically!!!

How can we set the default to 'Open' instead of 'Closed'?

That has been partially addressed in the cvs release - you can now set the default state of the status (and other types) in the Case Tracker settings page. Besides that, it still sorts alphabetically. That won't be entirely resolved until I add weights to state types, which is on my todo list.
