Zen

Zen is the ultimate starting theme for Drupal. If you are building your own standards-compliant theme, you will find it much easier to start with Zen than to start with Garland or Bluemarine. This theme has fantastic online documentation and tons of code comments for both the PHP (template.php) and HTML (page.tpl.php, node.tpl.php).

This theme saved me at 2am. Three hours of messing with 1000+ lines of nasty Garland-adapted code later, I abandoned it and recoded the site as a Zen sub-theme in under an hour. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The idea behind the Zen theme is to have a very flexible standards-compliant and semantically correct XHTML theme that can be highly modified through CSS and an enhanced version of Drupal’s template system.

Out of the box, Zen is clean and simple with either a one, two, or three column layout of fixed or liquid width. In addition, the HTML source order has content placed before sidebars or the navbar for increased accessibility and SEO.

The name is an homage to the CSS Zen Garden site where designers can redesign the page purely through the use of CSS.

Fusion

Fusion is a powerful base theme, with layout and style configuration options built in that you can control through Drupal's UI. It's based on a simplified 960px or fluid 12/16-column grid. It's designed to be used with the Fusion Accelerator module (or with Skinr in Drupal 6), with numerous useful block styles included.

Marinelli is a 3 column, tableless layout theme with a wide image banner and a "top-tabbed" primary-links system.

Tao

Tao is a base theme for Drupal that is all about going with the flow. It is not
meant for general-purpose use, but instead takes care of several tasks so that
sub-themes can get on with their job:

• Aggressive resets of not only browser default styles but Drupal core defaults
• Unification of several template families into a single consistent format (e.g.
  node.tpl.php, block.tpl.php, etc.)
• Theme overrides of several core annoyances (fieldsets, pagers)
• On-screen print stylesheet display and framework for further customized print

Tao makes several assumptions about how you, the themer, would like to work with
Drupal and the theme system:

Color Settings

Pixture Reloaded uses the color module (like Bartik and Garland). This allows you to modify the color of the theme to your liking. There are 18 preset color combination's and you can generate your own by using the color picker on the theme settings page.

Noggin Module Support

The Noggin module allows you to upload header images for your theme. Pixture Reloaded includes a bunch of extra settings that allow you to easily position or tile those images without knowing CSS. See our help page on how to use the Noggin module and our extra Noggin settings.

Adaptivetheme Base

The Drupal 7 versions of Pixture Reloaded are subthemes of Adaptivetheme - you must download and install it first. Adaptivetheme provides the core functionality such as layout control and other settings.

Acquia Marina

The Fusion base theme and Skinr are required. Skinr for Drupal 7 (dev release) is usable now but it is recommended that you proceed with caution and do some of your own testing.

The Drupal 7 version now has lots of CSS3 sexiness -- no more images, and even more skins!

Acquia Marina is an advanced theme developed by TopNotchThemes in partnership with Acquia for their Drupal distribution. It contains the same kinds of features you'll find in our other Drupal themes.

The 7.x-2.x version also allows you to add a menu to the Header region (to the right of the logo/site name) which will be automatically styled and work as a Superfish menu.

Acquia Prosper

Acquia Prosper is an advanced Drupal theme by TopNotchThemes, with a monochromatic look and clean lines. It is designed as an Ubercart e-commerce theme that is easy to customize, but is extremely flexible for any type of site.

This theme is a subtheme of the Fusion Core base theme. Positioning and block styles are controlled through Drupal's UI via the Skinr module, which is required if you want to actually use styles. MAYO

MAYO theme's name is taken from a phrase "MAke Your Own" and "MAYOnnaise" which I love ;-). As the name describes itself, MAYO is developed to be a theme that provides users easy way to customize and create a theme they like.

MAYO is developed based on the experience with PIXTURE theme. However, it takes full advantage of Drupal 7's color module and advanced theme settings. MAYO is simple but flexible. You can customize the look of your MAYO theme easily from theme settings page. It does not require you to have the good knowledge of CSS, HTML and PHP.

What can be customized from the theme settings page?

• Color of most of the theme elements (base, page, header, sidebar, node, footer). In many cases, you can specify text color, link color, background color and border colors of each element.
• Base font and heading font type (either Serif or Sans-serif) and base font size.
• Page layout options such as width of the site (fixed width layout or liquid layout), margins, sidebar layout and width, etc.
• Styles such as menubar styles and round corner for node/sidebar block.
• Detail layout of header area contents (logo, site name, slogan, search engine box)
• You can easily upload and add your own image as the background of the header area. (You can use both background image and logo at the same time).

Basic

Basic boasts a clean HTML structure with extensible CSS classes and ID's for unlimited theming possibilities as well as a top-down load order for improved SEO.

Basic's goal is to provide themers the building blocks needed to get their designs up and running quickly and simply.

Basic is perfect if you want a simple, smart, and flexible theme starter.

Acquia Slate

NEW: Port of this theme to the Fusion theme system with tons of new features is up in the 3.x branch! The Fusion base theme and Skinr (2.x dev [installation instructions] if you want to use the photo banner) are required for the 3.x version.

Acquia Slate is an advanced, dark, corporate Drupal theme developed by TopNotchThemes in partnership with Acquia for their commercially-supported Drupal distribution.

NineSixty (960 Grid System)

This theme is based on the 960 Grid System by Nathan Smith. Details on its background can be found in a journal entry.

NineSixty is a base theme with all the files provided by the 960 Grid System. From the sketch sheets to all the styles from the framework are included. There are a few modifications so it better fits into Drupal. All the details are inside the README.txt file.

Any modifications should be done from sub-themes. All that's needed is a "base theme" entry within your sub-theme's .info file pointing to "ninesixty". For example, base theme = ninesixty.

It is not simply a grid based layout system. It helps workflow by allowing better communication between developers, information architects, visual designers or anyone involved. The sketch sheet can be used for the rough initial designs by the visual designer. Meanwhile the OmniGraffle and Visio templates can be used by the IA. From there the Photoshop and Fireworks templates are provided to refine the sites graphics and layout. From start to finish with all sides involved, this helps everyone share a common visual language.

Even if you are the only one developing a site. The simple layout system is very easy to implement freeing you to other more important tasks.
