Bio:

Founder (stealth) | Formerly Platform.sh, Commerce Guys, Drupal. Created Open Goldberg Variations.

Robert Douglass is a seasoned entrepreneur, innovator, and long-time leader in the Drupal community. Currently, he serves as the Entrepreneur in Residence at Open Strategy Partners, where he leverages his expertise to help clients maximize their strategic impact. Robert's career spans over two decades, during which he has been at the forefront of CMS, e-commerce, and cloud hosting solutions.

A passionate advocate for open-source software, Robert discovered Drupal in 2003 while seeking a content management solution for musicians. His contributions to the Drupal ecosystem have been foundational: he is the original author of the Memcache and Apache Solr modules, a core contributor to multiple Drupal versions, and an author of the pioneering book "Building Online Communities with Drupal, Wordpress, and phpBB." He has also been a driving force in the growth of Drupal's security protocols and governance, co-founding the German Drupal Association and serving on the Drupal Association's General Assembly.

Robert's career highlights include strategic roles at key companies within the Drupal ecosystem. He was an early team member at Acquia, where he contributed to professional services, engineering, and enterprise sales, helping shape the company’s early success. At Commerce Guys, Robert led the development of Drupal's e-commerce capabilities as Director of Products, a role that laid the groundwork for what would later become the successful platform, Platform.sh. At Platform.sh, Robert continued to build bridges between technology and community as the Chief DevRel Officer, fostering enthusiasm among developers worldwide.

Beyond his technical and business acumen, Robert is well-known for his contributions to community culture. Together with Jeffrey McGuire, he co-created the legendary DrupalCon Prenote sessions, which blended storytelling, music, and community participation to set a welcoming tone for the conference.

Robert's recent ventures include co-founding a startup focused on promoting biodiversity and developing software prototypes in emerging fields such as RAG-enhanced AI. An active angel investor and environmental advocate, he continues to explore and support solutions that address the climate crisis.

Fluent in both English and German, and having presented at over 100 Drupal events worldwide, Robert brings a wealth of experience, insight, and a deep commitment to the community to every stage.

Outside of technology, he spearheaded the Open Goldberg Variations project, which produced a public domain score and recording of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, performed by pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, using the MuseScore platform to ensure free access for everyone. Building on this success, he expanded his efforts with projects like the Open Well-Tempered Clavier and the Libre Art of Fugue, further democratizing access to Bach’s masterpieces. Douglass’s initiatives reflect his commitment to blending music, technology, and open licensing to preserve and share cultural heritage globally.
