Sorry for my late respons, we have been very busy to setup our crowd-funding campaign for Drupal Social.

I can see an upgrade path would be use full, however:
1. Community applications tend to be complex by nature, making upgrading usually difficult.
2. Drupal 8 is in a lot of ways different than Drupal 7
3. We will build Drupal Commons from scratch, it is not a Commons 4.
4. We have limited funds, we would rather spend it on the new distribution than on migration.
If you maintained a nice architecture on your Commons platform it should not be too hard to migrate your content to Drupal Social.
We would love to help you out with this and make a good case out of it!
