Hi, folks
I just wrote a module that let's me put and present points on geographic (or any other) maps. For the luck of a better name, it's called "geourl", and a demonstration can be seen on my home page: http://www.havlik.org/geourl/maps/AT
The module is really at "quick & dirty" stage now, but it works for me. Question: is anyone else interested in this kind of stuff?

Interesting work
Your draft has the benefits of simplicity and an intiutive interface.
I'm working on a related initiative, described in full at http://gworks.ca/site/?q=node/view/96. The aim is to implement mapping capabilities, including dynamic map generation, for any node type using standards as defined by the Open GIS Consortium.
I'm certainly interested in collaborating if there's a fit.

GPS
I find both of your projects interresting for travel and photography sites, where you want to present locations based on GPS coordinates.
A project where I participated is the World Wide Panorama
http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp604/
Being able to use an image node in Drupal, categorize the image, include the GPS data and then autmatically generate dynamic maps, that would be a great feature.
vector maps
My long-term plan is to do something with real map server in the background, upload the data for the whole world on it, and then have fun. However, this is a lot of work...
In the meantime, WorldKit allows me to do some cool visualization with a minimum of fuss, and to collect the geo-data that can be used with a better map server later.
Right now, my biggest problem is to find a nice set of free icons to use with the maps. Do you know of any?
Btw, geourl requires your node_image for associating the maps and legend icons with the maps. It's quite possible that I'll have some patches for it later on.
worldkit integration
Is WorldKit included as part of your module? Or are you having some script taht interface from the stored data to WorldKit? I'm using it myself on a my site http://ichris.ws/friendsmap but WorldKit was running manually with points added by hand.
It's be nice to see some screenshots of how the module is when you are using it. Anyway, nice work! :)
Not sure
Nop, I can't include the WorldKit - people will have to download it separately.
As for the screenshots, I think I'll add some here:
http://www.havlik.org/taxonomy/view/or/56
It's empty for the moment...
Btw, I've asked for the CVS account & submitted a request for new module, so you'll be able to see it on your own soon.
Keep up working on this
I think a map presentation node is needed in Drupal. I was going to start working on it when I have finished smth I am more interested in right now.
I think going with standards defined by Open GIS Consortium is the best approach.
For web presentation I would personally choose SVG. Maybe it is not that popular yet, but I like the possibilities and openness of this format :-)
nice
looks very nice (though I would like to see a PNG next to a flash version?)
please consider getting a CVS account and upload it central where it belongs!

Similar project
Just yesterday I started coding a similar module that uses a flash-based mapping engine called "pointmapper" available from MapBureau (*not* open-source). I had previously built a small PHP/MYSQL application from scratch (choirgeek.com) to do the same thing, but wanted to integrate the concept into an existing open-source CMS like Drupal.
I know just enough PHP to be somewhat dangerous, so it will certainly not be a masterpiece straight away. My goal is to create a page that will map the location of user-contributed events, based upon their US ZIP code, as in the existing site mentioned above.
Module working
The module mentioned above is now in service at http://choirgeek.com/map. It pulls an event's zipcode from the event table and builds an array of map points based upon the coordinates of the zipcode according to the location data available from the civicspace project. Again, the module uses shareware code from http://mapbureau.com. As you can see, I have not yet obtained the key to remove the "unlicensed" text on the map.
Your comments are welcome.

awesome!
It looks really nice! And the integration with calendar module seems perfect.
I am thinking of making a map for external links, perhaps with flexinode so I can enter latitude and longitude coordinates, then have points in the map made from that.
Would you be sharing your module publicly? It would help me a lot :)
BTW, if you continue using mapbureau without paying, will it stop working?
How do I get the CVS access???
I filled in the form asking for CVS access to contributions twice in the last two weeks, and got absolutely no answer.
Is there some secret formula for getting a write access to contributions CVS, or what? Hallo, folks, I want to upload this module!
Deno! Still got your mod?
Is it up anywhere? Can you share it with me until they get you access? jasonwhat at hotmail(dot)com
Geo Data
Can any of you guys guide me to where I can find free state (latitutude/longitude points) boundary data. I'm not looking to write a module for Drupal, but rather a project at work that deals with a map of the US.
Thanks - Frank

Don't know if they have individual states, though.

Drupal services
My Drupal services
Still no CVS account...
WTH?
CVS & your module
Might be worth asking on #drupal at calvino.freenode.net if it hasn't come
This looks like a great module -- worth mentioning on the civicspacelabs.org forums, too, as some of the applications clearly fit into their kinds of functionality. I could definitely find uses for it, if it has more than just USA capability.
busy
He is very very busy. But being on #drupal helps with the process as long as you aren't a pest ;) But there are some great and useful discussions there as well so it's a good habit to be on there.
is this module anywhere?
Is this module available for use anywhere?
