Warning: preg_match() [function.preg-match]: Unknown modifier 'n' in file_scan_directory [#1037934]

Hello,

Just tried my first upgrade to D7 on Win 7 / XAMPP platform.

The update.php was loading for a few minutes and then it spewed out quite a lot of errors like this

Warning: preg_match() [function.preg-match]: Unknown modifier 'n' in file_scan_directory() (line 1984 of C:\xampp\htdocs\...\includes\file.inc).
