Separation will help development of the Renderer API. And it will make it possible for other modules to declare a dependency on just the chessboard API.

eric_a commentedThe same module split in 6.x-2.x would break the upgrade path to 7.x-1.0. Giving support to users who tried this path and broke their site is not something I'm going to commit to at this point. Here's #3 for 6.x-2.x.
