mr.baileysActually, HTTP Referer (including the spelling error) is the correct term as coined in RFC 1945 10.13. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_referrer#Origin_of_the_term_referer for a history of this issue.
Since in this case we are actually talking about "HTTP Referer" as defined in the above RFC , I think we should leave this as is...
franzI didn't know that, funny... I think it may be kept as it is then...
franzAs pointed out on #1, there are reasons to maintain a misspelled version of this word: refered. However, in 8.x as for today I can count:
Referrer: 30 occurrences (almost all of them on statistics module)
Referer: 17 occurrences (various pieces of core)
So I guess we need to go for a standard, as it may get confusing/ugly
Comment #4
franzI suggest that the misspelled version is used only when after HTTP. Variable names, UI texts and docs should use either "HTTP Referer" (with capital R to reference the official standard) or "referrer".

mr.baileysLet's mark this as a duplicate of #343626: Fix "referrer" spelling errors and rename {accesslog}.url to {accesslog}.referrer, since that issue has advanced further than this one.
