I would expect disabling the pager would mean the query would return everything (like limit = infinity), instead, nothing is returned. This is not how things should IMO.

I can confirm this, and it is actually a bug. We need to fix it in D8, then backport.

The gist of the bug is:

diff --git a/includes/pager.inc b/includes/pager.inc
index 2a31c88..233cbd3 100644
--- a/includes/pager.inc
+++ b/includes/pager.inc
@@ -67,7 +67,7 @@ class PagerDefault extends SelectQueryExtender {

     // A NULL limit is the "kill switch" for pager queries.
     if (empty($this->limit)) {
-      return;
+      return $this->query->execute();
     }
     $this->ensureElement();

We need to extend the tests.

Unfortunately this comment is unclear about the purpose:
// A NULL limit is the "kill switch" for pager queries.

Is it a kill switch for the query or a kill switch for the paging of the query?

As it stand now, this would be a behaviour change, and would need to be done in a BC fashion if we do want to change this. I would say this is "works as designed" now, but I'll ask in #bugsmash for other opinions.

Drupal core is moving towards using a “main” branch. As an interim step, a new 11.x branch has been opened, as Drupal.org infrastructure cannot currently fully support a branch named main. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted for the 11.x branch. Title: Disable pager through setting limit as FALSE does not give expected behaviour » Pager disabling through setting limit as FALSE does not give expected behaviour

IMO the comment // A NULL limit is the "kill switch" for pager queries. is a clarification for configured/headless views.
When using the View UI, the UI should avoid having an empty value. Issues exist for that. Will link later.

Version: 11.x-dev » main

Drupal core is now using the main branch as the primary development branch. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted to the main branch.
