Cleaned up a direct port of the D6 version with some performance improvements. This also provides some experimental support for Features which needs additional testing.

This has been used in production for several months without additional API changes being needed. Pushing minor changes that were in the dev beyond the alpha release

Keeping this alpha as the API could be in flux but initial testing in a staging environment proved these were working so publishing here. Once ELMS goes beta this will probably move beta as well though it may stay behind versions for the time being.
