In newer vBulletin 4.x versions attachments can be showed in a topic using BBcode: [ATTACH=CONFIG]1234[/ATTACH] where "1234" refers to an attachment id column "attachmentid" in the {attachment} table of vBulletin.

Would be neat with support for the new attachment format in vB 4.x.

Some additional info:
The new format supports creation of thumbnails to be displayed automatically instead of the original full size image, when clicked a Lightbox will pop up displaying the full size image.
To upload new attachments CKeditor's product CKFinder is used.
The new vB also supports mass creation of thumbnails for attachments without one or in case a new thumbnail size setting is selected.

Unfortunately it's going to have to go into the 'patches welcome' pile for now, as I doubt I'll have time to implement anything like this soon.

Just some thoughts: I wonder if there's a Drupal module that does something similar to this, or whether it could be added to the BBCode module. Though, for old vBulletin posts there would be the problem of converting the attachment ids.
