Greetings from Brussels!

FOSDEM is beginning at Université Libre de Bruxelles. This afternoon, we'll be delivering a set of interesting Drupal presentations here in the developer room, but the truly monumental event was the developer sprint in the past two days. A lot of good discussion has taken place about usability, structured content and other initiatives we're excited about. Expect a lot of patches in the coming weeks, right after the 4.6 release. Session chairs will be updating the developer sprint pages with summaries of findings from each room; look for that to happen when people get back home and overcome jet lag.

Wish you were here. Do your best to attend Drupal Conference 2006, wherever that will be!

Read on for photos and journals of the event.

Thanks for the update Jon.

I for one am looking forward - with anxious anticipation - to hear about all the things that have been (and will be) discussed in Belgium.

Have a great time!

And well done for the piccies - gives Drupal a more human dimension.

Thx folks,

Somewhat uncomfortable to speak, but it was very instructive. ;)

I just hope there will be some papers about the conversations in Antwerp of the last days.

Thanks for the update. Know that there are alot of people lurking in the background eagerly anticipating news and results from Belgium. :)

I'm glad to see the metadata initiative being discussed! I think this is the most promising aspect of Drupal's future I've come across.

I'll keep looking out for updates.

Looking forward to the findings of the structured content/metadata discussions. It looks like you guys are having a great time, wish I were there :(

However, in keeping with the spirit of the event, I've undertaken my own code sprint over the past 2 days. :) The next phase of Node Relativity is just about complete.

My photos from the code sprint are now online. A write-up will soon follow.

I never realized Antwerp was so beautiful.

Dextro’s picture

A little bit off topic, but hey, why not.

Do not underestimate Belgium. :) Another tip: Bruges, my cosy hometown

I turned one of your photos into a wallpaper (note the roof):

Do you happen to have a bigger version of that picture so I can make larger sizes? ;)

Steven,

I was too hasty and didn't see our little droplet in the morphed version. Very witty!

Goba has taken over my office, so I can't process/upload my pictures until I can get back in. ;)

Gerbrand, Florian and Susanne captured all Drupal presentations. With two professional cameras and a microphone, no less.

Jo Wouters’s picture

Great presentations.
Especially "Metadata-driven workflow" (which is really much more powerfull then I even imagined.), "The content construction kit" (I knew flexinodes, but I started to like them even more after the presentation) and "e-commerce platform".

I'm looking forward for the video-recordings (missed one presentation), that were recorded by two professionals (at least they looked very professional to me) it might also help in understanding everything that has been said, cause the buzzing air-conditioning sometimes made more noise then the 50 of us together :)

Great weekend at Fosdem !

btw: The pictures spoiled my weekend though: I never noticed I was getting that bald... Next time I'll get at seat with no photographer behind me ;-))

I've uploaded a few photo's to my site:

Sorry for the dark photo's. The flash on my compact digital is not ideal in these conditions ;-).

As a co-organizer of this year's Drupal conference, I've learned an aweful lot -- I had never organized a conference before. During the conference I compiled a list of things that could have been done better. I'm going to turn my notes into a Drupal conference/sprint HOWTO. In addition to my own notes, I'd like to know what you enjoyed most or what could have been done better. I'll incorporate all feedback into the HOWTO, which we can then use while organizing next year's Drupal conference.

Having one or two of these 80cmx2m meter banners created would be really nice to give cold lecture halls a more friendly/personalized touch.

They're not that cheap, but really tough and will last you for years to come.

Dextro’s picture

OK, I try to translate my feelings into words. :)

  • Most of the presentations were overall good. The technical side (slides, ...) is no problem. But sometimes it was hard to follow the line through some presentations. I know that the subject is sometimes abstract and that it is hard to translate that into words. But i think that making drupal easier to understand and making it more user/admin friendly should be one of the main topics in the next few months.
  • Most of the presentations were too quiet, it was hard to understand. Maybe look for a microphone next time?
  • Show that Drupal exists. You had a great location next to the main entrance. Make some big banners, flags,... Make your own door with burned in Drupal logo .... ;) Just make sure that everyone knows what drupal is and where to find it. :)
travischristopher’s picture

I was wondering if there were any slides or notes from the presentations available for download?

jonbob’s picture

Here. Not sure about other presenters'.

We'll be hosting them all on drupal.org eventually (probably in the same time frame as the video torrents will be available).

If you have troubles with a particular contrib project, please consider filing a support request. Thanks. And, by the way, Drupal 4.5 does not work with PHP 5.

Bèr Kessels’s picture

I do not have proper i-net access ATM, so can someone please collect all these notes, slides and files and add them to our handbook?

And if this solved you problem, would you be so kind to report back that it helped? This will help others whom are looking for the same solution.

Kristjan Jansen sent me a cool panorama photo which I annotated and added here. Does anyone know who the person hiding behind Károly is? ;)

I thought I was sitting next to Vlado and there were clothes next to me and then Kristjan Jansen (Kjartan on the other side and Dries).

I also vote that Vlado is twice on the picture. There were also two seats there, not three, so we have two Vlados on the picture. The hair and the dress is all the same for the two.

Steven’s picture

Kristjan did say something about "crappy photoshopping", the picture was probably assembled from multiple parts (there's something weird about the glasses and plates in front of Dries).

Steven got it right, there is much of multiplication going on on the right side of the picture ;)

I'm curious as to if/when the videos will be available. It would be very interesting to watch them, and videos might be as helpful to Drupal as they've been to Ruby.

I'd be happy to provide some space and bandwidth if that would be helpful. I can even do video capture/conversion etc., if that's needed. Let me know how I can help!
