Adding integration with the i18n_field module would allow the placeholder text to be translated into multiple languages.

If you're interested in this feature, I can supply a patch which adds support.

i18n_field integration for field placeholder module has been implemented in i18n_field_placeholder submodule (http://drupalcode.org/project/field_placeholder.git/commit/1267c1e)
