The latest dev branch of jquery_update has been known to case problems because of the update to jquery_ui. (see here) This could be a simple issue to overcome if those modules could check for jquery_ui version.

we can not get everyone to rewrite their code

Will you allow this choice of "old" Jquery for admin part in the JQuery Update module settings ?

I can't see why giving the Jquery UI choice would force people to change their code, can you explain a bit ?
