How to remove Product Catalog Vertical Tab?

Some users including myself are finding difficulty with the Product Catalog vertical tab. As discussed in the link below

Is there a workaround for disabling or hiding this feature?

Or alternatively, allow the label to be changed to something more generic, such as 'categories', which would be more in keeping with kickstart lingo.
