if ($field['table_name'] != $this->table || !empty($this->relationship)) {
        $this->related_table_alias = $this->query->ensure_table($field['table_name'], $this->relationship);
      }
      $table_alias = !empty($this->related_table_alias) ? $this->related_table_alias : $field['table_name'];
      $field_name = $table_alias . '.' . $field['field_name'];

Problem : When combining a custom Date field with the node's creation property, and only if the field is "above" 'Content: Post date' in the additional settings form, the query produced tries to access the following:

field_data_field_my_custom_date_field.created instead of node.created

thus producing the error:

Exception: SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column 'field_data_field_my_custom_date_field.created'

I cannot yet pinpoint why this is happening.

If the field in question appears "below" 'Content: Post date' in the filter's additional settings form, it works perfectly.
