Hide CCK field/s from search results and indexing - solution Drupal 6??

I saw this problem being addressed in Drupal 5 (HERE) but what's the solution for Drupal 6?

Tried this "Go to your content type, then "display fields", then "search", and then you can chose whether fields should be excluded during indexing and/or display." but to no avail.

I need to hide/prevent a particular CCK Field from being indexed and search. Do I need to hack the node.module as proposed in the above solution if so how?
